A huge Miami Beach mansion – where legendary gangster Al Capone died – has gone up for sale for $14.9 million.

Mob boss Capone bought the Palm Island property in 1928 in cash for $40,000. He spent a reported $200,000 to improve security by installing a gatehouse, a seven-foot-high wall and search lights.

The house, which was built in 1922, became party central for Capone and his crew who had made a fortune through bootlegging, money laundering, prostitution and gambling in Chicago. Capone even planned the infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre at the home where seven rival gangsters were murdered by hit men dressed as policemen.

The home – which was extensively renovation in 2015 – has kept a lot of its original features including a 30-by-60-foot swimming pool which Capone boasted was the largest in Miami at the time.

The 30,00 square-foot estate features a main villa with four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, and a two-story pool cabana and a two-bedroom, one-bath guesthouse, which Capone used as a guardhouse.
The main property boasts many of the original features including a black-and-gold Art Deco powder room, 1920’s ceiling lights, and a roaring fireplace in the living room.

Capone was sent to prison in 1931 for tax evasion and served six and a half years of an 11-year sentence, most of them in Alcatraz.

He was released in 1939 and eventually returned to his Palm Island getaway. After prison, the gangster led a reclusive life and suffered from dementia. He died in the Miami Beach home on January 25th 1947 at the age of 48 from a stroke. His widow Mae eventually sold the estate in 1952., Image: 369138587, License: Rights-managed, Restrictions: , Model Release: no, Credit line: Profimedia, IMP Features
