According to reports, the woman had panic attack and fainted after learning that the jade bracelet she had just dropped on the floor and smashed was worth 45,000 USD.
It is not clear whether the piece of jewellery was usually stored behind a display case in the market in Ruili city, but the woman is believed to have been trying it on when it slipped off her wrist and cracked in two.
Footage shows the woman left unconscious in the arms of a family member and she was later laid on the ground so she could recover from the shock.
According to witnesses, the jade sellers refused the family’s offer of paying 10,000 USD in damages because it was not even enough for them to break even. Instead, it is believed they settled on 26,000 USD.
